A route map for high-quality work-based learning in higher education08/11/2022
Together with experts from the field, NVAO Netherlands has worked on a guide that can inspire study programmes, students and organisations in the (further) development of work-based learning. The guide 'A route map for high-quality work-based learning in higher education' describes a system that can contribute to the dialogue on the quality of work-based learning within higher education and is therefore also relevant for review panels responsible for the assessment of study programmes with work-based learning in the programme.
Increasingly, the implementation of (higher) education does not only take place in lecture halls, but shifts to the workplace. As keeper of quality within higher education, NVAO recognises this. However, this shift also raises questions for independent review panels assessing higher education programmes.
Work-based learning has taken an important place within study programmes in recent decades. However, it remains difficult to assess whether work-based learning contributes to student learning. A student who participates in daily work processes within a profession does not automatically acquire skills or competences that are important for the programme or the discipline.
Therefore, NVAO has made available the guide 'A route map for high-quality work-based learning in higher education'. This guide serves as a source of inspiration for assuring the quality of programmes with work-based learning in the programme. The guide, which is available in both Dutch and English, is not an elaboration of the accreditation framework.
